Best community colleges in the west LA area?
I was looking into Pasadena city college, but i dont want to live in pasadena. How is santa monica college, la city college? Any others? I just want to go to school and get a decent education, and love the area i live in. Is that too much to ask? How hard is the class work at these schools.. what are the teachers like and im going to be moving from OK. Id like the school to be one where i can meet lots of new people. Help me out?
I heard santa monica is harder than pasadena college. True?
And how early can i apply to all of these? Start dates? I take it all community colleges are open schools, and will accept anyone with a high school dip or ged
PCC is generally more rigorous than SMC, but they’re very similar. PCC gets more highly educated professionals in advanced classes looking to add to their professional qualifications, it has to do with the local population. (This is also somewhat the case for LACC.) There is no best CC, they are very similar, and it’s really up to the student. It’s always best to attend the CC closest to where one lives, because showing up is a big part of success, so make it easy to show up when you might not feel like it. The exception is for special programs available at one CC but not at others.
To attend a CA community college, a student must be a high school graduate, or 18 years old, or a high school student with approval from their principal. So basically just about anyone.
For general classes, the curriculum is easier than high school AP classes, mostly just a bump up from average public school classes. Lots of kids at my son’s private school take classes at CC’s to advance, so they can take AP Calculus AB in 9th grade. His school will not give credit for the classes, they don’t consider them rigorous enough, but they can use them for advancement, but only if they get an A in the class and an A on the school’s final for that subject.
All CC’s have lots of people, SMC tends to be more high school-ish than the others. The professors vary greatly, from amazing to toothpick in the eyelids to stay awake boring. Mostly, I’ve been very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the teaching, and that’s from taking classes at several CC’s long after receiving higher degrees from universities.
SMC brags about their transfer numbers, but that’s the numbers (more transfer students = more transfers, also equals more competition), not the actual transfer rate for admitted applicants (the important stat), which is similar to the average CA transfer rate, and most LA area CC’s.
If you are considering applying for Fall 2011, you will likely have a very tough time getting any classes. Look at the Open/Closed Class lists online. Most CC’s start classes very soon, the last week of August. If you’re thinking for Spring or later, look to find out the application dates, as they vary. Apply online as soon as possible, so you get the best class registration date for your situation. Freshmen (especially non-resident) have the lowest priority for class registration at most CC’s, because priority is mostly based on completed units at that CC. Many classes were already closed before the first freshmen class registration date. Budget cuts caused canceled classes, and more adults going to CC’s to be retrained, means less class availability. Some of the less well known CC’s might be easier for a freshmen to get classes at, you might try to find out which CC’s and look into attending there. If you’re not a CA resident, you will have to pay about $6000 more a year in non-resident fees.
Good luck!
