Making A Cookbook for A School Fundraiser
Creating a cookbook can be a great way for a school to raise some funds. Here are few things to keep in mind before you get going on this project.
Theme and Participation:
The first thing that you will want to consider before you start your cookbook project is who’s recipe contributions you want for the book. If you are raising money for a specific club, for instance, you might want to gather recipes from the members or their parents. You could also, however, create a theme that is based on the club you are raising money for. For example, if it’s the French Club, you can gather up recipes for French cooking and make that your theme. Remember, however, that the more people at the school you can get to contribute, the better sales will be.
If you are creating a book that is more school-wide, then you will have some other options. Do you want to do a cookbook based on the favorite recipes of teachers and administrators? Coaches and their significant others? The important thing is that you choose a theme and stick to it as best you can.
Once you have your theme, you will need to ask your cooks for their favorite recipes and give them all a deadline by which the recipes have to be given to you. This may take some effort in the form of wheedling and cajoling, but if you are persistent enough, you should be able to get a fair amount of participation. Start with an email or memo stating the objective and the deadline for the project, and send out reminders every couple of weeks (or whatever seems appropriate to you) from then on.
Organization and Design:
When you have gathered all of your material, you will have to decide how you want your book to be organized. Depending on your theme, you can go the tried and true method of organizing the cookbook by the types of dishes (main courses, desserts, appetizers, etc.), or you can divide the book up into chapters by department or team. This part is entirely up to you and there are lots of creative ways you can put the cookbook together. Remember, though that the key is functionality, and so you will want to make sure to create a table of contents and maybe even an index, so your users can find what they are looking for quickly and easily.
As far as photographs, yes you will want them and they should be as high quality and high resolution as possible. Photos of the dishes would be perfect, but acquiring these can be a little labor intensive. Perhaps you could enlist the help of a photography class.
Put the pages together in InDesign, Illustrator, or QuarkXpress (or something similar) if you have one of these programs. If not, you should be able to do a decent job in MS Word.
Printing and Binding:
Use the highest quality printer that you can get your hands on, and when it comes to binding style, there are a few great choices for cookbooks, including: plastic comb, spiral coil, double loop and thermal binding. If your school doesn’t have one of these machines, take a look around online for a great deal, as they are all fairly inexpensive and very easy to use.
