How to prevent mold from growing in a jar?

I have a locking airtight jar that I kept some stuff in and after 6 days, i found mold growing in there. Did mold grow because moisture was forced to remain in the air tight jar? Should I open the jar now and then to allow moisture to escape and to allow airflow?

You have to have mold spores in there along with moisture. What are you storing in the jar? The spores or bacteria or whatever it is that is growing probably came along with that.

You can sterilize the jar by boiling, and dry thoroughly then seal, probably not much will survive that, but when you start putting “stuff” in it – contaminants come along with.

As for opening the jar – it depends on what you have in there. If it is food – toss it out, start over and keep it in the fridge. Airtight or not, a jar isn’t going to preserve food all on its own.
