Brief Introduction To The Chinese Lunar Calendar
The longest chronological records in history, the Chinese Lunar Calendar dates from the year 2600 BC. Emperor Huang Ti created the zodiac based calendar which is an annual calendar and is based on the cycles of the moon. The first month falls between January and February and a full cycle is 60 years with 12 cycles of 12 years.
Legend has it that Buddha summoned all of the animals to pay their farewell to him before he left the earth. The animals that showed up, in the order they appeared to him, were rewarded for their respect and a year was named after them (i.e. 12 animal zodiac). The months are also closely associated with agriculture and are named after various fruits and flowers that are in season during the same months they are named after.
The first year of the Chinese lunar calendar is the year of the Rat. It is said that the rat tricked the other animals and he jumped into first position pushing the cat into the river making them enemies for all of time. People born in the years 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984 and 1996 are said to be very generous, charming and imaginative. They have a tendency to be quick tempered and critical and make good publicists, writers and critics. Some famous people born under this sign are Burt Reynolds, Englebert Humperdinck, Marlon Brando and Ron Moody.
The rooster is a sign that has traits of hard work and clear thinking. Born in the years 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993 and 2005, they are not afraid to speak what is on their minds and can come across as being braggarts. They tend to be world travellers and restaurant owners. Famous roosters are Eric Clapton, Mia Farrow, Rod Stewart, Yoko Ono and Michael Aspel.
Hard working people, those born under the year of the horse in the years 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990 and 2002 are independent by nature, intelligent and a bit selfish although friendly. They make good poets and scientists. Some famous people born in these years are Aretha Franklin, Clint Eastwood, Barbara Streisand, Robert Wagner, Ian Cuthbertson and Helmit Kohl.
The charming and intelligent people born in the years 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, and 2003 are those born under the sign of the sheep. They are elegant and artistic and like material things. They can be worriers and complainers and make good beachcombers, actors or gardeners. Some famous people born under this sign are George Harrison, Prunella Scales, John Major, Leonard Nimoy, Mikhail Gorbachev and Gene Hackman.
The Nationalist government adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1929 after they gained control over the Republic of China. The Peoples Republic of China has used the Gregorian calendar since 1949. Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival and most traditional festivals are celebrated according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar and is still used in traditional households, it is called the Imperial Calendar with both Gregorian and Chinese dates noted.
