It's Better to Travel

It’s Better to Travel

$9.98

Less overtly jazz influenced than their later albums (and the only album on which the core duo of keyboardist Andy Connell and singer Corrine Drewery is joined by drummer Martin Jackson, who had formed the group with Connell in 1985), Swing Out Sister’s 1987 debut It’s Better to Travel is a dreamy collection of mostly electronic pop songs that manages to sound warmly organic through the judicious use of real strings and horns and Drewery’s lovely voice, which recalls the throaty purr of vintage Dusty Springfield. The album spawned a worldwide hit in the coolly sophisticated “Twilight World” and an all-time classic in the sunny opening track “Breakout,” one of the finest U.K. pop singles of the late ’80s and one of the few hits from its era that doesn’t sound completely dated in retrospect, but unlike many albums in this style, It’s Better to Travel works as a complete unit. Album tracks like the Northern soul-tinged “Fooled by a Smile” and the cinematic instrumental “Theme From It’s Better To Travel” are every bit as good as the singles, and the well-paced album has a natural flow. The CD adds four bonus tracks, remixes of the two hit singles, and “Surrender,” plus the meditative instrumental “Communion.” ~ Stewart Mason, All Music GuidePerformers: Andy Connell – Keyboards; Corinne Drewery – Vocals; Martin Jackson – Percussion

For a Better Tomorrow

For a Better Tomorrow

$13.99

Although Mad Science Fair have loosely been classified as power pop by some observers, they have a grungier, buzzier edge than most such groups of 2005 vintage. The swing between somewhat restrained, quieter passages and distorted, assaultive ones — such a common feature of much post-1990 alternative rock, almost to the point of cliché — appears on a few of the tracks. While they play taut, concise songs with a straining passion, sung with slightly reedy assurance by guitarist Mike Clayton, it’s hard to pick this out of the crowd when there are (and were) so many guitar bands using similar elements. The song titles “Green Day vs. Weezer” and “Retro Anthem” hint at a sense of ironic humor, but, alas, those songs are actually fairly straightforward efforts without twists that distinguish them from their surroundings. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music GuidePerformers: Mike Clayton – Guitar, Vocals; Dave Domal – Drums; Jim Mefford – Guitar (Bass)

My Better Self

My Better Self

$11.99

Starting from the atypically playful cover photo of Dar Williams sticking out her tongue, stained from the blue jawbreaker in her hand, My Better Self is clearly a big departure for the New England folkie. In contrast to both her sparse early records and her more recent albums that had hesitantly worked a wider range of musicians into her guitar-and-vocal tunes, My Better Self kicks off with the self-confident AAA folk-rock jangle of the sardonic “Teen for God,” a rueful but affectionate memory of earnest adolescent moralizing set to a jaunty pop tune. This is in no way a sell-out attempt to appeal to a wider pop audience, but an opening up of Williams’ music to incorporate unexpected but entirely appropriate new musical and emotional shadings. Williams steps up to the challenge with some of her finest material, including the instant classic “Beautiful Enemy.” Quite possibly the finest song Williams has yet recorded, “Beautiful Enemy” matches a sharp lyric (including possibly the first chorus to turn the word “hegemony” into a vocal hook) to a terrific ’60s pop melody that’s given a strong pop-rocking arrangement powered by a killer organ part; for the first time, Dar Williams sounds more like Aimee Mann than Shawn Colvin, and it’s an exciting transformation. The ’70s California rock touches on the illegitimacy ballad “Liar” send what might have been just another acoustic folk tune into a direction closer to a vintage Fleetwood Mac or Carly Simon single, and all the better for it. Even the nervy cover choices, Neil Young’s “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere” and Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” (released shortly after the Scissor Sisters’ glammy reinterpretation of same), come off well in the context of Williams’ introspective originals. Stewart Lerman’s production and arrangements bring in guests like Marshall Crenshaw, Ani DiFranco, and the guys from the Hooters (Rob Hyman co-wrote two songs, in fact), but this remains Williams’ album throughout, and it’s the best of her career. Her better self indeed. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music GuidePerformers: Rob Hyman – Cordovox, Organ, Piano, Wurlitzer; Julie Wolf – Accordion, Clavinet, Fender Rhodes, Glockenspiel, Mellotron, Melodica, Organ, Piano, Vox Organ; Eric Bazilian – Vocals; Ben Butler – Guitar; Marshall Crenshaw – Guitar, Vocals, Vocals (Background); Ani DiFranco – Guitar, Vocals

Vintage Mac

Vintage Mac

$8.98

This is yet another super-budget compilation of tracks by the original (aka Peter Green/Jeremy Spencer era) Fleetwood Mac. There is little to distinguish it from the other faceless dozens unless you count that several of these cuts are from the live at the BBC sessions, such as “Albatross” (the studio version’s better), “Looking for Somebody,” and “Man of the World.” You already know what’s on the rest: “Green Manalishi,” “Black Magic Woman,” Duster Bennett’s “Jumping at Shadows,” “Oh Well,” and “Rattlesnake Shake,” to name most of them. There are ten tracks in all, and if you know anything about the early Fleetwood Mac you already have them. If you don’t, check out the more complete double-disc collections that are far more rewarding than this slab. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi

Better Luck Is a Barroom Away

Better Luck Is a Barroom Away

$13.92

The Starline Rhythm Boys is a trio delightfully out of time and place, producing a potent blend of classic country and vintage rock & roll in the year 2000 and residing in Burlington, VT. Don’t let that fool you, though: These boys are the real deal. Former Asleep at the Wheel member Leroy Preston knows it; he pens the liner notes and contributes the fine “Buckets of Love.” The album takes listeners back to the time when the lines between rock & roll’s infancy and country music were blurred, stirring echoes of “Blue Moon of Kentucky”-era Elvis and landing smack dab between Jimmy Martin and Kitty Wells. Standout tracks include the bluegrassy “Piece of Alabam,” the honky tonkin’ title track (written by standup bass player Billy Bratcher), the searing rock & roll of “Rollin’ Danny,” and Rose Lucas’ vocal turn on “Life’s Heart Is Unfair.” But there’s not a loser in the bunch and this is great listening from top to bottom. Sean Mencher, from the rockabilly group High Noon, produces. ~ Erik Hage, All Music GuidePerformers: Gene White, Jr. – Electronic Mandolin; Gene White – Electronic Mandolin, Fiddle; Allerton “Al” Hawkes – Harmony Vocals, Mandolin, Vocal Harmony, Vocals (Background); Gary Primich – Harmonica, Mouth Bow; Starline Rhythm Girl – Vocals (Background); Bill Bratcher – Bass, String Bass, Vocals, Vocals (Background); Cartwright ‘Carty’ Thompson – Guitar; Danny Coane – Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric), Harmony Vocals, Vocal Harmony, Vocals; Mark Cousins – Drums, Drums (Snare); Al Lemery – Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric), Harmony Vocals, Vocal Harmony, Vocals; Rose Lucas – Vocals, Vocals (Background); Sean Mencher – Guitar (Acoustic), Gui

One of the New York Times’ most popular journalists presents groundbreaking scientific news about marriage. And, surprise: It’s good news. We’ve all heard the statistic: Fifty percent of marriages end in divorce. It’s enough to make many couples give up when the going gets rough, thinking that’s what everybody else does. But what if it weren’t true? What if, in fact, it’s not only possible but often easier than you think to save a seemingly troubled relationship? These are the questions Tara Parker-Pope asked herself after her own divorce. An investigative journalist on the health and wellness beat, she turned to some of the top biologists, neuroscientists, psychologists, and other scientists for the facts about marriage and divorce. Those facts were more positive and provocative than she’d ever expected, and For Better offers page after page of astonishing, eye-opening good news. Parker-Pope presents the science behind why some marriages work and others don’t; the biology behind why some spouses cheat and others remain faithful; the best diagnostic tools created by the most cutting-edge psychologists to assess the probability of success in getting married, staying married, or remarrying. There are questionnaires to uncover potentially damaging hidden attitudes toward spouses. There are tools to show the impact of routine, fresh activity and how small adjustments can make a huge difference. Tara Parker- Pope’s genius is for exploring the science behind the big issues that affect our lives every day and translating that science into advice that we can use-every day. For Better is the definitive guide to the most profound relationship of our lives.

Some Things Are Better Left to Saxophones

Some Things Are Better Left to Saxophones

$11.48

"The fact is, June Akers Seese refuses to lie. When her eye lights on something, she arrests it with a photographic infallibility that is simply breathtaking. She writes Hemingway’s best declarative sentence through the lens of Kafka and the searing elegance of Joan Didion. Yet, on top of everything, she manages to be very, very funny-often excruciatingly so. Some Things Are Better Left to Saxophones, her latest novel, embodies vintage Seese and her all-too-human, all-too-like-us, unforgiving domestic landscape: inside our houses, insides our heads, inside our hearts." -Joseph Bathanti, Professor of Creative Writing and Co-Director of the Visiting Writers Series at Appalachian State University In this novel, June Akers Seese writes of two retired Detroit teachers and their retarded daughter, Melody, who lives with them and works at a downtown hotel folding napkins and polishing tabletops. Melody’s sisters and brother have moved on. One sister to Japan to study languages and literature; another to a boarding house on the Wayne State University campus where she collects Master’s degrees that go nowhere and earns her living as a sometimes waitress. Their brother has fled to Alaska where land is cheap and his carpentry skills valued. All approaching 40, these offspring have no plans to marry or return home. They are all trapped in a dream of escaping the responsibility of Melody when their parents die.

Vintage Hi-Tech

Vintage Hi-Tech

$9.98

Whether heard as a jarring abandonment of the contemporary R&B rulebook or a blanching of the form’s all-too-necessary characteristics, Spacek continues down its own little path for better or worse on its second album in three years. Vintage Hi-Tech isn’t much of a change from Curvatia. Steve Spacek’s voice barely raises above living-room chit-chat volume and drifts atop splintered, discombobulated grooves; flicks of keyboard; and the odd textural garnish. There’s a nearly baffling absence of radio-friendly hooks, leaving the listener to hone in on the group’s idiosyncratic production tricks. Though awash in a battery of percussive patterns, these tracks are songs in the technical, traditional sense. A less-than-immersed listen wouldn’t indicate this, because they hardly resemble what you hear in the mainstream. Nothing explodes, everything is subtle — which could play a role in the biggest argument against them: that they’re too timid and tentative, that some more expressive and more effective moments could be wrenched out of the songs’ core elements. What’s evident on this album is that Spacek is now even more about sounds than the verse-chorus-verse pattern. And the sounds they employ are less likely to be smears of strings and disorienting keyboard effects, each of which are used sparingly in comparison to the debut. All time spent searching for the big hook or the quick fix of larger-than-life sounds is lost; it’s best to let the group take you on a head trip. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, you have to admit that Spacek has their own sound working in their favor. They are the lone purveyors of micro-soul, and they set the standard with each successive release. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music GuidePerformers: Edmund Cavill – Guitar, Guitar (Synthesizer), Guitar Synth; Mpho Skeef – Vocals; Steve Spacek – Vocals, Vocals (Background)
